Descrição: The formula τά τ' ἐόντα τά τ' ἐϲϲόμενα πρό τ' ἐόντα suggesting in Hes. Theog. 38 the content of the song inspired by the Muses to Hesiod, reproduces that which is referred in Il. 1, 70 to the prophet's knowledge. The common notion is that the formula expresses the close connection between poetry and prophecy. As a matter of fact it does not indicate an indistinct omniscience common to both prophet and poet, but, referring to the homeric mantis, the knowledge of events happening in definite periods of time and, to Hesiod, the knowledge of eternal reality, including gods, nature and mankind.
