  • Descrição: Tradition-based African arts have always been vehicles for knowledge production, both by original owners and users and for subsequent collectors, curators, academics, and audiences. As Yoruba scholar Olabiyi Yai asserts, tradition implies innovation rather than stasis and is perpetually reinvented. In this essay, the author further insists that innovation depends upon well-defined relevance, both within local communities in which the art forms have been used and for those who study and interpret them. Roberts examines the ability of future curatorial practices to both reflect and instigate a dynamic turn in the study of African arts and to understand what kinds of intellectual and aesthetic energies might be produced in the process.
