Descrição:
Located within the palace were royal workshops manufacturing silk cloth and ivory caskets; few of the textiles survive but no less than five of the twenty-nine surviving boxes are held in the Victoria and Albert Museum. Mariam Rosser-Owen is here more concerned with the decorated surfaces: marble, moulded stucco and carved wood which were painted and, together with geometric friezes of tile mosaic, created dazzling polychrome effects within the palace interiors and are illustrated by surviving fragments such as a white marble capital carved with stylised forms painted with lapis lazuli and moulded plaster panels painted with bright red, and blue pigments and gilding. More than three-quarters of the images reproduce objects from the Victoria & Albert Museum's own collections; the breadth and eclectic nature of these holdings extend to albumen prints and early photographs, as well as watercolours and architectural models of buildings, all of which combine to create a vivid impression of Andalusian architecture as it was preserved in the nineteenth century.
