Descrição: Party systems are considered essential parts of the political architecture in contemporary representative democracies. In an approach that is also valid to the sub-national level, the party system is part of the dynamics of governability, as it structures the relation between the government (executive) and the parliament. On the other hand, as the party system animates the game between opposition and situation, it provides conditions for a government to be democratically responsive to the interests of citizens. This study is dedicated to the party system of the State of Rio Grande do Sul from 1982 to 2015, focused on its contribution to the state governability (Government and Legislative Assembly). Relevant challenges include an increase in the number of parties in the Parliament and the engineering of political coalitions.
