Descrição:
Investigated is the temporal & aspectual focus of the action or state implicit in the progressive in Spanish & Portuguese. Only those cases where the copula & the participle combine to form a periphrastic construction are considered. Presented is a detailed analysis of the meaningful contrasts between progressive & nonprogressive forms. This meaning is one of aspectual focus on the event as overt, developing, & on-going. It is further demonstrated that the progressive, although having no temporal reference as part of its intrinsic meaning, is compatible with whatever time reference is attributable to the copula form. If a distinction is made between grammatical meaning & contextual interpretation, the progressive is a unified verbal form that is a viable & integral element of the particular lang. I. Mielonen
