Descrição: After outlining the Balinese political system under Suharto's "New Order," ways that this system began to change in the years leading up to & immediately following the collapse of Suharto's regime in May 1998 are described, highlighting such developments as (1) the growth of the student movement & popular resistance to New Order government; (2) the rise of the nationalist PDI-P party; (3) the empowerment of village structures & traditional vigilantes (pecalang); & (4) new forms of social & political exclusion of non-Balinese outsiders. How the intersection of local, national, & international events is creating a more solidified Balinese cultural identity is discussed. 14 References. K. Hyatt Stewart
