  • Descrição: This article presents a study of the Siddis of the African Cavalry Guards in Hyderabad, India. I first present an ethnographic description of an annual, sacred performance within the Afro-Indian community of Hyderabad and then provide a comparative analysis. The evidence supports a key conclusion from a previous study that there are elements of tension within the Afro-Indian population in Hyderabad. However, the nature of such tensions is different than previously characterised. These tensions primarily concern varying approaches to promoting community cohesion and ongoing processes of transforming Afro-Indian identities. This article also addresses a broader, comparative perspective by relating these social dynamics of the Afro-Indians in Hyderabad with those from Gujarat and Mumbai. In Hyderabad, a primary element of Afro-Indian heritage is based on the shared memory of earlier generations' participation as free guards and soldiers for the Nizam of Hyderabad.
