  • Descrição: This article discusses the relations between city and commerce, and its main objective is to analyze patterns of supermarket insertion in cities. The reflections presented are the result of four case studies carried out in Juiz de Fora, a medium-sized city in the state of Minas Gerais, considering the following categories of analysis: history of occupations in the lot, building in the lot, volumetry, aspects of the surroundings, accesses, facade, and visual communication. The methodology was eminently based on an exploratory and qualitative research, grounded on bibliographical, documental, and empirical research. At the end, we observed that supermarkets follow logics of architectonic and urbanistic insertion according to the lot and the localization, besides having the strategies of the brand in full dialogue with the surroundings. It should also be noted that nowadays, in addition to daily shopping places, supermarkets are strolling and leisure spaces, making it possible to understand them as reflections of human behavior in the contemporary world.
