  • Descrição: Dom Casmurro ([Dom Casmurro], 1899) provides a starting point for appreciating the distance separating the late-nineteenth-century Brazilian writer Machado de Assis from his contemporaries. This novel contains incongruencies, obscure passages, & disconcerting emphases, forming an enigma whose solution challenges the conformist spirit of the favored elite of Brazilian ideology. Helen Caldwell's criticism in The Brazilian Othello of Machado de Assis (Berkeley: U of California Press, 1960) caused shock waves in the Brazilian literary community by alluding to the dubious aspects of the novel's lyricism. By examining the role of the narrator, a husband relating a tale of what he sees as infidelity on the part of his wife, new perspectives are gained on this classic work.
