  • Descrição: The work of the architect João Batista Vilanova Artigas has been studied by many researchers, but the various descriptions of his work always have contradictions. The study aims to demonstrate the formal connection of the three phases of the architect, and how his trajectory reached the apex with Brutalism. The proposed approach provides a description of the approaches developed to date, which link the originality of Artigas’ architectural language to the historical context and to the architectural precedents. For this, a set of three representative projects of each phase will be analyzed: the Rio Branco Paranhos House - 1943 (Wrightian phase); The Londrina Bus Station - 1948 (Corbusian phase); The Building of the USP University of Architecture and Urbanism - 1961 (brutalist phase). It is hoped, therefore, to raise the interest for application of the method in the development of teaching projects, contributing to the History of Architecture and to the quality of the work of current and future professionals.
