  • Descrição: This article begins by noting how one writer on Jorge Luis Borges had remarked on the curiosity that he was considered "universal", how his "international reputation had purged him of his nationality". Its aim is to explore what is at stake in such purging by discussing the cultural-political import of rival interpretations of Machado de Assis within the critical space of world literature. Two sets of readings are located as part of the global literary system, one rooted in the national-historical experience of the periphery, the other based in the great metropolitan centres where new entrants to the canon of literary masterpieces are sought. The article explores the relation between these readings and the conceptual matrices that lie behind them. (Quotes from original text)
