  • Descrição: Examines how the rival discourses on the "postmodern" among Brazilian intellectuals -- like anywhere else in the global university regime -- molded an area of debate characterized by ambivalence, divided between the stern determination to dismiss modernity in toto, &, more warily, to move beyond the canon of high modernism in art & art history. A striking consequence of this dispute was that the notion of cultural modernity was newly illuminated in contemporary discussion, provoking reassessments & substantial revisions of the very idea of modernism & its significance in artistic & literary history, a phenomenon especially relevant for Brazilian "Modernismo." Following the arguments over postmodernism, "Modernismo" has been transformed into a historic power instead of a gradual, continuing, overarching national cultural endeavor. The connections between Brazilian postmodernism & "Modernismo" are intricate, dissimilar, fluid, & overlapping in terms of both piecemeal continuity & dramatic discontinuity. References. K. Coddon
