  • Descrição: Stability and growth are the central goals of nations in this revolutionary age. Economics dominates both domestic and international affairs, and the market has triumphed although the state continues to play an important role. Ideology has declined, with nationalism a substitute in many instances. Yet the nation-state is under seige from both above and below. In Northeast Asia, economic dynamism is dominant, yet in each country, complex problems exist. Japan will continue to be an economic power although substantial restructuring is necessary. China's phenomenal growth will continue, but many serious problems must be tackled. Taiwan's success is tied to continuing internationalization. Korea is starkly divided between the South's economic success and the North's abysmal failure. Russia and Mongolia are slowly emerging from socialism. Throughout the region, Natural Economic Territories (NETs) are emerging. Politically, the situation is more fragile. Japan has entered a period of political instability. China is in transition with a need for institutionalized federalism. Russia's politics remain fluid. Korean unification is not in sight. Mongolia must build a new political order, and Taiwan is challenged by the PRC. Regional relations, moreover, remain troubled by old problems. Yet a cautious optimism is warranted. Global war is unlikely; developments in science-technology permit rapid advances; and the opportunities to expand dialogue, official and unofficial are many. [PUBLICATION ABSTRACT]
