Placé à l'intersection des civilisations d'Orient et d'Occident, alliant la tradition la plus ancienne aux initiatives les plus modernes, Israël, en pleine évolution, constitue un microcosme où coexistent des communautés aux origines ethniques, sociales, linguistiques, les plus diverses, mais unies par une même volonté de vie en commun. C'est dire combien les problèmes classiques de population peuvent y présenter d'acuité et d'originalité, qu'il s'agisse de l'accueil et de l'assimilation des immigrants, de l'homogamie, de la fécondité différentielle, de la lutte contre la mortalité infantile, de l'influence du milieu, pour n'en citer que quelques-uns. Personne, dans le monde, n'était plus qualifié pour traiter cette question, que M. Roberto Bachi. Fils de l'éminent et regretté statisticien italien Riccardo Bachi, il se place, par ses travaux, au premier rang dans la science statistique. Membre de l'Institut International de Statistique et professeur à l'Université hébraïque, il a été appelé à diriger le Bureau Central de Statistique d'Israël. Population a la satisfaction et le privilège de présenter à ses lecteurs cette étude documentée, qui fait honneur à la jeune science démographique d'Israël. /// The State of Israël, one of the smallest countries in the world by the size of its population (1.400.000 h.) offers nevertheless to the demographer and sociologist, the possibility of observations and studies of the most exceptional interest. Placed at the intersection of the Orient and the Occident, allying the most ancient traditions to the most modern initiatives, Israël constitutes a microcosm where the communities of the most diverses ethnic, social, linguistic origins co-exist, united by a common will to live together. It is then obvious that the classical problems of population must present here a particular character of sharpness and originality, be it the question of homogamy, of differential fecundity, the struggle against infantile mortality, or the influence of new social conditions. Nobody was better qualified to treat this subject than Robert BACHI, son of the late and eminent Italian statistician, Ricardo BACHI. His works place him among the leaders of the science of Statistics. Member of the International Institute of Statistics, professor at Hebrew University, he has been called upon to direct the Central Bureau of Statistics in Israël. "POPULATION" is proud to present this documented study which does honour to the new population science of Israël.
