  • Descrição: The Family Health Program (PSF), introduced in Brazil in 1994, aims at promoting better living conditions and assisting the families and the people registered. Between 2005 and 2010, the share of the municipalities that joined the Program went from 90% to 95% in Brazil and from 77% to 85% in the State of Rio Grande do Sul. This study aims at analyzing the impact of the Program on child health in the municipalities of Rio Grande do Sul between 2005 and 2010. By using panel data econometrics, we found that the increase in the Program's population coverage tends to reduce the number of children with low birth weight in the year following the implementation of the Program and tends to reduce the infant mortality rate two years after its start.
