  • Descrição: The article marks the centenary of Le Corbusier's first visit to the Athenian Acropolis. He studied its forms intensely and it lodged in his memory as an architectural paragon to which he would aspire all his life. The pope of Modernism let it be known that "the past is my only real master". His architecture was radical in a double sense, both revolutionary and a return to roots, which can be seen in the Villa Savoye and in earlier works that explored the classical language and its resonances with the vernacular in more overt ways. The apotheosis of the dynamic sculptural form he saw in the Acropolis is the roof terrace of the Unite d'Habitation in Marseilles. (Quotes from original text)
