  • Descrição: Changes in the phagocytic activity (PA) of blood leukocytes, total leukocyte counts (Lc) and concentrations of plasma immunoglobulins (IgC) and albumin (ALB) were investigated in sheep on diet containing pollutants from a copper and zinc works. The experiment was conducted with 12 ewes of the Improved Wallachian breed, at the age of 1.5 to 2 years. Experimental lambing ewes (seven animals) were administered every day after morning feeding by means of a gullet probe the elements Cu, Fe, Zn, Mo, Se, As, Cd and Pb coming from pollutants and feed at the amounts of 435.17; 389.42; 6251.48; 2.277; 5.385; 18.494; 0.649 and 22.587 mg per head, respectively. The first ewe died on day 42, manifesting the symptoms of zinc intoxication, the last on day 58. Statistically significant differences in PA out of the number of potential phagocytes were recorded between the experimental and control lambing ewes on days 8.15, and 58 (P0.05, or P0.01). The phagocytic activity was lowest in the group of experimental sheep at the end of experiment (53.6 per cent). The PA index of the experimental group in comparison with the control was significantly lower on days 37.44 and 58 (P0.01). An increase in PA out of the total counts of leucocytes was observed in the experimental ewes on days 8.15 and 58 (P0.05); in comparison with the control it was related to the higher leukocyte counts in the experimental ewes. A statistically significant decrease in the ALB and IgC concentrations in the blood plasma of experimental sheep was recorded on days 8, 15, 23, 44, and 58 (P0.01, or P0.05), in comparison with the control. The changes in some indicators of cellular and humoral immunity indicate that the feeding of pollutants from the copper and zinc works had immunosuppressive effects in the experimental ewes.
