  • Descrição: A laboratory study was designed to examine the meanings connoted by various organizational symbols and the influence of symbols on individuals' perceptions of the psychological climate of fictitious organizations. Fifteen college students were randomly assigned to each cell of a 4 × 3 factorial design in which symbols (authority symbols, empathic symbols, reward symbols, and no symbols) and contextual information (bank, motion picture company, or none specified) were manipulated by showing drawings of an organization's reception area and providing a written description of the organization. Subjects completed semantic differential scales on which they evaluated each of the symbols included in the drawing with respect to the meanings connoted by the symbols. They also completed a climate questionnaire. It was found that each of the three types of symbols connoted specific meanings. In addition, the results suggest that symbols are a salient source of information used by people in forming their impressions of psychological climate. Implications for the symbolism and climate literatures are discussed.
