  • Descrição: This article is the result of ethnographic fieldwork conducted in 2009, dealing with the work of missionaries from the Society of Jesus who operate in tribal areas of South Gujarat, a region located in West India. A small group of them have committed to « social action » and, at the same time, seem to have renounced any proselytising ambition. After analysis, it appears clearly that these Jesuits try to avoid any confessional reference in public, in order to mobilize individuals more efficiently around a so-called « Adivasi » tribal identity. This case study thus feeds into broader reflections on the complex relationships between religion and individual or group involvement in public space. [PUBLICATION ABSTRACT]
