Descrição: The tropical forest reserves of our planet are being irreversibly destroyed in order to obtain merely short-term economic gains. The author traces how the introduction of credit for the exploitation of natural resources resulted in the "commodification" of nature, requiring the extraction of ever greater profits. Intensive exploitation, however, places an ecosystem in such stress that it collapses and must later reorganize itself at a lower level, a new "homeostasis". The subsequent lower level of ecological complexity will limit the options of future generations,, which is contrary to all socio-ethical principles. The article concludes that by destroying the bases of human existence, the ecological disaster extends into a social and economic disaster. [PUBLICATION ABSTRACT]
