  • Descrição: This chapter aims to analyse the image of the wound in Chrétien’s production as well as in some other samples of epic literature written in langue d’ oïl. At the same time, a significant part of the article will be dedicated to investigate forms and meanings of violence in the above-mentioned corpus. Why does the description of wounds, mutilations, decapitations, blood and dismembered bodies reach climax in this kind of literature? To what purpose is intended this hyperbolic violence, within the context of Medieval culture? The hypothesis that the author intends to verify is the following: the horrible spectacle of the bodies killed and dismembered, as well as the cruel wounds inflicted on the body of the warriors, have not only a negative meaning, but rather express the cruel joy of chivalrous vitality.
