  • Descrição: Paris and Sao Paulo cities are with markedly different histories of occupation. Starting from secondary data, in a literature review that sought the confrontation on visions of authors from the fields of urban planning and mobility to historians and scholars of the formation and development of urban mobility systems, this article has condensed the history of how the difficulties of mobility evolved in each of these major urban centers, in a case study comprehending specially the twentieth century, a period of profound transformations in the two cities, although having occurred in so substantially diverse directions. In this perspective, were also gathered arguments to characterize, in general, the challenges that urban mobility brings literally from thousands of years, for the living in the restricted spaces of the large cities. Quite unlike a recent problem, this is a challenge that remains and changes, although some of its main elements are incredibly persevering throughout history. To conclude, some of the contemporary alternatives used in the two cities are discussed, in order to better direct the issue of urban mobility, and also some of the most successful alternatives that are recognized as solutions to these problems so present in all major cities of the world.
