  • Descrição: Abstract The essay deals with the use of the example of “fiery iron” in Luther’s work and sheds light on important aspects of his theology. The first section is a short inquiry into the understanding of red-hot iron in ancient philosophy of nature and the use of the example in the theological literature before Luther, including Origen, Bernhard of Clairvaux, Thomas Aquinas, and Meister Eckhart. Luther himself uses ferrum ignitum as a simile in two theological topics. On the one hand, it is a simile of the living presence of God in Jesus Christ and in his word and sacrament. On the other hand, he uses the ferrum ignitum to describe the human being who, in faith, has become one with the divine word: For a person who trusts
