  • Descrição: Background: Diphtheria is a serious disease that can be protected by vaccination. The aim of the study was to determine immunity against diphtheria and the necessity in booster doze vaccination of adult age population. Methods: Antibody levels and immunity against diphtheria were determined in blood of 568 healthy participants and results were assessed using chi-square test. Diphtheria antibody level was measured by micro-ELISA technique and Nova Tec Corynebacterium diphtheriae toxin IgG-ELISA (Dietzenbach, Germany) equipment have been used. Antitoxin level <0.1 IU/ml are accepted as poorly immune and those whose antitoxin levels ≥ 0.1 IU/ml are accepted as immune for diphtheria. Results: A total of 568 men and women were included in the study, 267 (47%) and 301 (53%). Complete immunity was determined in 267 cases (47%). Immunity distribution rates were 80.8%, 48.4%, 24.1%, 43.7%, 39.2%, 50% and 53.3% respectively in each decade beginning from 15 years old. It was observed that the immunity of female 26-35 years of age group was statistically significantly higher than the same age male group(p=0.035). Conclusions: Immunity against diphtheria can only be maintained in adults if routine booster doses of diphtheria toxoid are administered. Td vaccination program should take place in adult vaccination program and should be repeated in every 10 years.
