  • Descrição: The focus of this paper is on human/place bonding in contexts with extensive religious and sacred attributes, based on a framework that includes the architectural aspects of places. We studied the effects of individuals' perceptions of physical design on sense-of-place dimensions using several t-tests. The analysis was based on 302 questionnaires completed in seven state mosques across Malaysia. We categorized the mosques based on two architectural design approaches — modern and traditional. The study examined how the two design styles affect public perceptions and sense-of-place dimensions. This research provided empirical evidence of significant differences in architectural perceptions and sense-of-place dimensions between modern and traditionally designed mosques. This paper also aims to explain how and to what extent mosque visitors appreciate and react to decisions and design approaches taken by architects.
