Descrição:
Part of a special issue on religion in the United States. In an adaptation from a chapter of the book Obligations of Citizenship and Demands of Faith, edited by Nancy L. Rosenblum, the writer discusses the demise of the easy attitude that Americans have typically taken toward religion. He claims that recent events are forcing Americans to reconsider the casual assumption that religion can be ignored for public purposes because it is regarded as irrelevant to public life. He argues that Americans must also confront difficult questions about the potential conflict between loyalty to specific understandings of God and loyalty to the nation and its way of life, as well as how a free society should view its religious citizens.
