  • Descrição: The increasing prominence of science & parallel increase in state intervention in many capitalist countries have necessitated the articulation of a national science policy. Two factors have spurred on research in this area: (1) urgent practical need for more & better information about science, & (2) need for a deeper understanding of its organization & working. In the 1960s the field was most deeply influenced by the functionalist current, represented by R. K. Merton; however, his failure to systematize functionalist ideas has given preeminence to N. W. Storer & W. O. Hagstrom, whose approach is normative & internalist. Less unified are various attempts to study science by statistical & mathematical methods. A special section is reserved for the revival of complex studies of science carried out in the USSR & Poland under the inspiration of J. D. Bernal. Finally the large impact of T. Kuhn & K. Popper is discussed. Modified HA.
