  • Descrição: In reply to Maecenas' pressures, Horace justifies his inability to complete his 'iambi' by citing the example of Anacreon, who composed his poems to Bathyllus non elaboratum adpedem: this expression is usually taken by scholars to mean a "simple" or "neglected" measure. The aim of this article is to show that the expression concerns more specifically two main Anacreontic meters (anadast and hemiamb). During Horace's age, they were probably believed as degenerate variants of iambus.
