  • Descrição: The reflexive sociology of Pierre Bourdieu & other strains in postmodern social scientific thought are useful for analyzing the role that gender plays in the Islamic world, in particular, the wearing of the veil in religious & secular space. A special emphasis on Turkey's distinctive position in the Muslim world stresses the modern republic's secular political culture & its ongoing dilemma of the division between civil & religious society. Subjectivist social science (eg, Bourdieu's reflexive sociology) is sensitive to local or regional context in analysis. Other topics include modern intimacy & the distinction between the private & the public, a very important one for Islam. Some current methodological questions are reviewed, in particular, how the Westerner or academic can examine the private lives of women in Islam. It is concluded that useful perspectives for such analysis are multidimensionality of agency, & microconstructions for investigating the dynamics of religious life: the family, education, & faith. 45 References.
