  • Descrição: Biorefineries commonly deal with processing various biomass into fuels, and a variety of other value-added chemicals. Among the biorefineries, second-generation biorefineries have attracted considerable interest from the scientific community because it involves the biochemical processing of non-food and lignocellulosic biomass such as; forestry, agricultural and food wastes. The carbohydrate polymers like hemicellulose and cellulose present in the lignocellulosic biomass usually converted to fermentable sugars and these sugars subsequently converted to alcohols which can serve as fuels. In addition, these fermentable sugars can be used as carbon source for the production of various other high-value products like organic acids, biopolymers, biopigments, biosurfactants, etc. Moreover, another polymer (lignin) present in biomass can be used directly or indirectly used for the generation of electricity. Considering these facts, it is believed that biorefining of lignocellulose has the potential to solve many problems associated with the use of fossil fuels and it will also provide a wide-range of high-value products.
