  • Descrição: The first edition of Paris-Roubaix began at 5.30am on Sunday 19 April 1896. It still continues and is generally regarded as the most prestigious one-day professional cycling race in the world. Its unique nature of history and a course that contains many sections of unpaved, harshly cobbled tracks and roads helps draw and enthrall a worldwide audience. The heading picture shows a recent starting assembly, in Arthur Linton's day, 48 professionals and 6 amateurs, all paced by teams of tandem riders began the 280km. journey north. Arthur led for much of the way, his downfall and subsequent 4th final position is described by 'Le Velo du Dimanche' from that same day: (Amiens) 'Une Chute!'..descendant le boulevard de Châteaudun et l'avenue du General Foy, dans cet emballage, tout prês du contrôle fixe, le tandem des entraîneurs de Linton êcrase un chien. La machine recoit un choc terrible, la roue d'avant st faussêe, le cadre tordu.'Continuing to Roubaix, Arthur completed the course just one place behind Maurice Garin, later winner of the first Tour de France. Garin had a strong connection with coal mining, having worked as a chimney sweep in the mining town of Lens. If being underground for 8 hours and more at a time played havoc with the lungs, just imagine what the inverted life of a sweep must have involved?
