  • Descrição: National health insurer Aetna and Texas Health Resources, a 27-hospital not-for-profit system based in Arlington, have agreed to jointly own and operate a new health plan designed to steer patients to specific providers. Starting Jan. 1, Aetna and THR will offer the narrow network product in 14 counties around Dallas, where Aetna insures about 700,000 people. The plan will be available for fully insured and self-insured employers. Other terms were not disclosed. Meanwhile, Louisiana launched a major effort last week to expand Medicaid coverage to hundreds of thousands of low-income residents. Hospitals and other healthcare providers there say it can't happen soon enough. Surprisingly, Louisiana's Republican-controlled Legislature is largely going along, in part because the large infusion of federal Medicaid money will help ease the state's dire budget problems. But the expansion still doesn't solve the problem of a big budget shortfall that's threatening the survival of some of the state's nine formerly public safety net hospitals. Other health-care news is presented.
