  • Descrição: Australian animal health authorities are faced with the problem of deciding whether or not an attempt should be made to eradicate Johne's disease from sheep. Eradication is a formidable challenge because of the inadequacies of diagnostic and control methods for this disease. Furthermore, during the last 16 years nearly 200 infected flocks have been identified in Australia, indicating that Johne's may already have a firm foothold in sheep flocks in this country. Failure to control Johne's disease in sheep will result in the disease becoming endemic and being a significant cause of lost production to the Australian sheep industry. Valuable lessons can be learnt from New Zealand where Johne's disease in sheep over a period of 40 years the disease has become prevalent and very widespread. Are the tools and resources available to eradicate Johne's disease from sheep in Australia? Currently, depopulation is the only proven method for eliminating the infection from flocks. This is a very expensive procedure as it not only results in loss of animals but also the additional losses resulting from the need to spell land to ensure that no live Mycobacterium paratuberculosis are left on the pastures.
