  • Descrição: Originating in the late eighteenth century in the nascent democracies of the West, the feminist movement has grown and spread exponentially over the past two centuries, both socially and geographically. At its core, the movement has always been committed to improving the social conditions that bring hardship to women and prevent women from determining the contours of their own lives. But, given the extensive variations in women's experiences across time and place, there are significant differences in the concerns that propel women to mobilize and act. At the same time as these variations and differences have introduced tensions and conflicts among feminist movements, they have also inspired efforts to build coalitions across social and geographical divides.
