  • Descrição: In a panel discussion, several distinguished international law professors addressed international cultural law. Alison Dundes Renteln of the University of Southern California said that the notion of cultural rights has received relatively little attention, despite its importance in international human rights law. Although cultural rights are crucial for the maintenance of individual and group identities, domestic legal systems have seldom afforded them official protection. Robert K. Paterson of the University of British Columbia also said that although strategies such as treaties and litigation in domestic courts have achieved some success in addressing certain cultural property issues, many emphasize the need for other innovative types of approaches. There now seems to be increased readiness among parties to disputes involving cultural material to experiment with new solutions. The ILA Principles, therefore, seem timely insofar as they confirm established practice and build upon it to develop standards that seek to facilitate nonconfrontational outcomes.
