  • Descrição: Objetive: In line with the recent sugestion of an ultraviolet (UV) receptor in the turtle retina (Goede and Kolb, 1994) and the behavioral demonstration of vision in this spectral region (Arnold and Neumeyer, 1987) we recorded intracellularly from horizontal and bipolar cells to find out if responses in the UV could be detected in their spectral sensitivity functions (S (λ)). Method: Intracellular electrophysiological recordings were obtained with microelectrodes filled with Lucifer yellow with 0.1 M LiCi, or Neurobiotin conjugated with Cy3. At the end of the recording the cell was filled. Cells were classified in accordance with several criteria depth response waveform, receptive field characteristics, staining result (when avaiable). Results: Responses to light flashes in the UV were found in both horizontal and bipolar cells. In horizontal cells, both R/G chromaticity cells, and several luminosity cells were found to have UV sensitivity. S (λ) of most bipolar cells peaked in the red, but there was one bipolar cell with a peak in the green and one Y/B chromaticity bipolar. In many of these a UV sensitivity could be detected. Out of a total number of 24 cells recorded from, two thirds had responses to UV light. Conclusion: The present results show that UV input can be present, up to 30% of the maximum snsitivity, in many different retinal cell types. R/G chromaticity horizontal cells, green or rede dominated luminosity horizontal cells. It was also found in a Y/B bipolar cell, as well as in red dominated bipolar cells. Its relative importance will have to be assessed in further experiments with the use of chromatic adaptation and of center/surround stimulation. Supported by: CNPq 521535-930. FAPESP Proj.
