  • Descrição: Praia, the capital city of Cabo Verde, is one of many African cities founded and to a large extent formed by the Portuguese during the colonial era. Nowadays, the city is full of elements of heritage of the era of European domination. This chapter tackles the issue of preservation of that heritage in the city's landscape, with particular emphasis on several of its dimensions. Firstly, Praia's colonial urban layout was analysed, along with the buildings in its colonial old town known as Platô. Secondly, nomenclature of streets and squares as well as local monuments were examined. The results of field and archival research carried out in Praia lead to the conclusion that unprotected colonial heritage is disappearing, in particular when it comes to buildings in the city's historical district, which are being replaced by larger, modern facilities. The situation is different when it comes to colonial nomenclature and European monuments, which were removed upon decolonisation in 1975 and then partially restored following democratisation of the young republic in 1991.
