  • Descripción: It was investigate a sample of 3297 death certificates (DC) of women from 10 to 49 years old. For each case, interviews were done with the family, the physician and others, and the hospital medical records were consulted. It was created a new death certificate (NDC) that was compared with the original death certificate (ODC). In 218 cases, the deaths occurred during pregnancy or during a period of 12 months afther the delivery; in 96 of these cases, it was considered maternal mortality according the Who definition. In the ODC, only 61 were declared as maternal deaths and the investigation discovered other 25 cases. The adjustment factor was = 1,57. The adjustment factor discovered was different for each of the five regions of the country.Its is shown the causes of the maternal deaths in the ODC and in the NDC
