  • Descrição: The recently restored Strozzi Chapel in the west transept is the focus of an inquiry into the architectural evolution of Sta. Maria Novella. Evidence in the fabric of the adjacent campanile, new documentation concerning the rebuilding of the underlying Chiostro dei Morti, and stylistic analysis support a date of ca. 1340-48 rather than the previously proposed 1279-1284 or 1246. The Chapel exemplifies the practice of collective patronage by several branches and generations of the family. As an architectural entity, it constitutes a major project of the church's Opera under Fra Jacopo Talenti (1333-62) when, it is suggested, Sta. Maria Novella mirrored developments in the Opera del Duomo workshop.
