  • Descrição: Japan has come to the conclusion that without exports, there is no way it can sustain its domestic defense industry. Consequently, some in the government are pushing Japan's defense companies to seek overseas sales, but there will be limits on how far the country can go to become a supplier of military aircraft. At the IISS Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore last month, Shu Watanabe, Japan's parliamentary senior vice minister of defense, used the Asia-Pacific defense conference to pitch the Shin-Maywa US-2, an amphibious aircraft designed for search-and-rescue missions. Watanabe also mentioned the aircraft's range, maximum takeoff weight and the fact that the US-2 can land in rough seas with 3-meter-high (10-ft.) waves.
