  • Descrição: The article analyzes the art production and commissioning of artworks in Rio de Janeiro during the last decades of the eighteenth century, particularly the role played by Greco-Roman Classicism recovered by studies contextualized in Baroque/Rococo and by intellectual studies that tend to raise neoclassicism as a world with the potential of reconfiguring colonial culture as a component of a cultured universalizing ethos. In the Iberian Peninsula, military officers received more educational training, which involved research and studies on the material resistance in building safety, utility, and esthetics, which was then also disseminated to the colonial world. Secondly, its goal is to analyze the building and artistic programmes enacted in Rio de Janeiro by the colonial regime, starting with the government of Gomes Freire de Andrade up until the viceroys de 1763, striking a critical balance of the art works commissioned in this period, ranging from the creation of public spaces such as a Public Promenade and Carmo Square, to churches and public fountains, in addition to the ephemeral festivities and official celebrations organized by the power holders. Finally, this article analyzes the work of the talented and self-taught mulatto (mestizo) artist, Master Valentim, who was formed and practiced in colonial conditions alongside the academically trained professionals, creating atos de imagem stimulated by the Enlightenment and its contradictory cultural currents.
