Descrição:
Although astonishment for the eyes and ears is one of the main features of mythological plays from the Spanish Siglo de Oro, this corpus of Lope de Vega has essentially been studied from the perspective of its sources, to determine the originality of the poet. This is due to the fact that the best examples of this genre, which stars pagan heroes and gods and clearly shows the baroque intention of enchanting the senses, belong to the playwrights from the second half of the seventeenth century. This paper explores the methodological challenges for philology that stem from the widespread silence of the stage directions in mythological plays of the Fénix. As such, it is generally unknown that many of the verses were in fact sung and thereby fulfilled important dramatic functions. In this way, the verses sung in the mythological fables of Lope de Vega are valuable; they show the evolution of the poetic-musical ingredient in the eight pieces that he wrote and that, after different tests and given the innovations that arrived from Florence, he wanted to keep within the premises of the Arte nuevo.
