Descrição:
Since the late 1980s Brazilian local politics has been the site of political innovations and new democratic processes. One particularity of local politics in Brazil is the active involvement of social movements in the contestation of public social goods and services for the low income classes and their assertion of a political identity. This paper analyses urban and rural movements involved in local politics and how they have contributed to democratization and social change in Brazil at the municipal level. It asserts that social movements are influential in local politics, especially concerning municipal policies and processes to improve democratic participation.
