  • Descrição: In this essay I examine Howard Thurman's nature mysticism in order to consider how it might invite us to re-imagine the human relationship with the more-than-human world and to ask what his mysticism might contribute to Christian ecological spirituality in the 21st century. I will further describe some of Thurman's first-hand accounts of experiences in the more-than-human world and the holistic vision of life that emerged from those experiences. Next, I consider Thurman's nature mysticism within the context of early 20th century treatments of mysticism. Finally, I look at some recent works in environmental philosophy on agency and subjectivity in other-than-human species, reading Thurman's accounts of his experiences through them to ask whether they help us not only understand Thurman's nature mysticism, but if, by reading Thurman alongside them, we might find an invitation to imagine new ways of seeing and understanding the human relationship with the more-than-human world. This, in turn, can help us to re-orient that relationship in more spiritually generative and ethically responsible ways.
