  • Descrição: Emanating from the vantage point of 'the' modern film composer, emboldened by his representing the Golden Age's last active vestige, he lends currency to Sullivan's findings, validating an assemblage of Hitchcock's earmarks: ? [John Williams] deftly recapped a number of signatures from Hitchcock's long career: sinister harp, agitated pizzicato, churning ostinatos, orchestral chimes blending with real ones, a lyrical but cool romantic theme The absorption in 'intimate details of tempo and spotting', the tight linkage of music with 'image and filmmaking style'? (pp. 313-14) While these musical practices aptly describe Bernard Herrmann's compositional profile, Sullivan traces their lineage and employment to many of Hitchcock's composers, as well as to Hitchcock's frequent reliance on source music. Sullivan's facility as a storyteller who stages invigorating scenarios - interweaving descriptive musical analyses with a cornucopia of research materials drawn from Hollywood studio archives, Hitchcock's copious film-score notes, interviews with those who worked with the director, a selective bibliography, and so forth. The value and effectiveness of Hitchcock's Music rests in Sullivan's substantial aggregate of research, descriptive analyses, interviews and historical grounding - collectively cultivated in demonstrating the integral and reciprocal role that music held for Hitchcock and for his films. Contributor details Ronald H. Sadoff, Associate Professor and Director of the Film Scoring Program at New York University's Steinhardt School, is the co-founder and co-editor of the journal Music and the Moving Image (University of Illinois Press).
