  • Descrição: The 2008 Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Research Symposium was devoted to housing. Entitled 'Space at Home' and aiming to present the latest research for practising architects, it was extremely well attended, particularly by practitioners, and the programme interspersed contributions from housing researchers in industry and academia with 'show and tell' presentations by distinguished architects from the UK and overseas. Alongside housing schemes by Walter Menteth, PCKO Architects, and Proctor & Matthews, a highlight was the innovative Iquique project by Keynote Speaker Alejandro Aravena from Chile. For the most part, the research presentations consisted of market research looking at the present-day private sector in the UK, conforming to a long-established model in which the architectural profession gazes, with varying degrees of horror and fascination, at the 'untutored' practices of market-led housing. The emphasis on market-based research gave the event a decidedly Anglo-Saxon perspective and meant that, while much of interest was on offer, there were also major areas that escaped attention almost entirely, technical as much as historical. Le Symposium sur la recherche organisé en 2008 par le RIBA (Institut royal des architectes britanniques) a été consacré au logement. Sur le thème de « l'espace chez soi », cette manifestation qui avait pour objectif de présenter aux architectes les résultats des recherches les plus récentes, a attiré de nombreux spécialistes. Le programme mêlait contributions de chercheurs de l'industrie et du monde universitaire spécialisés dans le logement et présentations pratiques faites par des architectes reconnus de Grande-Bretagne et de l'étranger. Outre les programmes de logements exposés par Walter Menteth, PCKO Architects, et Proctor & Matthews, l'accent a été mis sur le projet Iquique par Alejandro Aravena, invité d'honneur du Chili. Dans l'ensemble, les présentations concernant la recherche étaient des analyses du marché du secteur privé actuel en Grande-Bretagne, se conformant à un modèle établi de longue date selon lequel la profession d'architecte observe, avec des degrés variables d'horreur et de fascination, les pratiques aventurières du secteur du logement basées sur le marché. L'accent mis sur la recherche inspirée par le marché a donné à cette manifestation une perspective radicalement anglo-saxonne, à savoir qu'elle était principalement axée sur l'offre mais qu'il y avait également des domaines majeurs qui échappaient presque totalement, tant au niveau technique qu'historique.
