  • Descrição: Australia's bauxite deposits (30% of the world's proven reserves), abundant cheap energy (coal and natural gas), and relative political stability, offer the Al industry a rare chance to engage in large-scale expansion in the 1980's and 1990's. Plans are in hand to build six new smelters and expand two existing smelters. The article gives a broad world review, noting that for Alcan in British Columbia, by building a new hydroelectric station alongside the one at Kemano, up to 1000 MW of cheap power could be obtained for a new smelter. More than 3 billion tons of bauxite of very high quality have just been tapped in Brazil. Requirements are continued scouring of the world for the cheapest possible power, and redoubling of efforts to improve recycling and recovery.--EPAA/AF.
