This project is being completed as part of the Clinical Psychology Doctorate at the University of Birmingham. Mentalising is the ability to make sense of mental states in oneself and others, and is an important part of developing and maintaining social relationships. Mentalising can vary across individuals, and previous research has suggested that anxiety can play a key role, particularly in social situations. Ultimately, anxiety may correlate with mentalising; as anxiety worsens, so does someone’s ability to take the perspective of others, and vice versa. This study therefore aims to investigate the research question: ‘how does mentalising impact anxiety in young adults over time?’ The primary aims of this study are: to establish whether a relationship is present between trait anxiety and 'mentalising' (a broad concept but conceptualised as including Theory of Mind and empathy) in an undergraduate Psychology student sample, and, by using latent class growth analysis, to extract growth classes to determine trajectories of anxiety over time. Extracted anxiety trajectories will be linked back to initial mentalising data to see if mentalising abilities influence how anxiety changes over a short period of time (between 6 to 10 weeks). It is anticipated that those who perform poorly on the mentalising task will show an increasing (worsening) trajectory of anxiety over time. Those who perform better on the task are expected to show stable or declining (improving) trajectories in anxiety.
