  • Descrição: The precious collection of Hebrew manuscripts of the Ambrosiana in Milan comes basically from two streams: the larger original one acquired by Cardinal Federico Borromeo and the other one given to the Library after the death of Moses Lattes (1883). L. Mortara Ottolenghi firstly published in 1972 an accurate description of one illuminated manuscript (X 112 sup.), written in Brescia in 1483, containing the Meshal ha-Qadmoni by Isaac ibn Sahula. The work of the scribe and decorator required 3 months, and the result was a splendid manuscript, originally consisting of 86 leaves and 79 tales, each one with illustrated scene. The book, written and decorated in 1281 in Guadalajara, reflects a complex cultural and spiritual concept of the world, science and Jewish traditional values. At the core of the tales (tales 54-55) we meet with young man "who comes from Sion and from Jerusalem" leaving his country and searching for wisdom in Egypt. The king of Egypt asks him all kinds of question, tasting his wisdom, and after years finally the end of the story is that he is able to marry the daughter of the king, so becoming the new king of Egypt, not because of his power, but just because of his wisdom, which is a combination of Mishnaic studies, philosophy and science. This tale mantains a high symbolic value for our time, since it offers an optimistic view for dialogue among peoples of different Mediterranean faiths and cultures.
