Description: The death of Antonio Candido affected many people, beyond sadness for the loss of a beloved and admired man. Despite being almost 99 years old, Candido's death was something like the drop that spilled the glass, in this case, a glass full of political dissatisfaction. As an assistant told me, people felt that something needed to be done. The same urgency appears in the words of a friend who woke up depressed the morning after Candido's death: Brazil is a horror, but she had Antonio Candido; Now that he is gone, how are we? Candido's daughter Marina de Mello e Souza, gave a statement to the newspapers that also pointed in that direction. She spoke of the disappointment of her father's generation, who had believed in a more egalitarian, more decent future, more directed towards the common good. This is surprising because, who knew Antonio Candido know that he was a particularly discreet man, who did not like to appear or command. In the conventional sense, the opposite of a politician. In his way, the rare combination of modesty, functionality and high level was still a politics-a kind of socialism without bizarre promises-that people ended up recognizing and admiring as such.
